Welcome Message from the Elected President
The rapid growth of information and communication technologies and huge amount of data that is generated every single minute make managing it more difficult and more complicated than ever before. At national scale, the benefit of this data is determined by success in dealing with it and making it relevant to the needs of the people and strategic plans of the country. Currently, we are witnessing an unlimited revolution in data production; therefore, providing infrastructure and electronic systems that guarantee good management of information has become very crucial in order to get the most out of this data.
Continuing the march of the Special Library Association-Gulf chapter in serving specialists and employees in the Information sectors and to give attention to recent developments in the field, it has been decided that the 24th conference, to be held in Muscat, will be about "Big Data". The conference will discuss the possibility of investing big data in the economy and sustainable development. It will also discuss a number of interrelated issues such as strategic planning, decision making, and the future of the information industry. As has been the case in the previous conferences, the coming conference will place particular focus on understanding the identity of Information Studies in light of the vast and massive production of information. Experiences and practical practices in dealing with big data, especially in the Gulf countries, will be given special attention in this conference in order to identify and evaluate them.
Accompanying the conference, there will be a specialized exhibition about public and private information institutions that aims to display the recent developments and technologies used in the field.
The board members of the association would like to invite academics, employees, and interested people to participate in the conference and the accompanying exhibition and invest in attendance at this annual scientific event to be held in Muscat.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to Sultan Qaboos University, represented by the Department of Information Studies, for their cooperation and participation in organizing this conference. I would also like to thank the board members of the association and all conference committees for their hard work in organizing this conference; we appreciate their constant commitment to its development. Not to forget all volunteers and admin of Millennium Muscat.
Let’s hope that these efforts are crowned by success.
Dr. Nabhan Hareth Al HarrassiElected President - SLA Arabian Gulf Chapter.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Conference.
